C is for Cartoons

Okay, so the last couple of days, I've been talking about writerly things, so today, I thought I'd digress and just talk about something that I personally love, cartoons, from Bugs Bunny to Toy Story.

Cartoons are great, they appeal to anyone and everyone, from 8 to 80 and I'm going to start by sharing Coyote Falls, the new offering for Roadrunner and Wile E Coyote. If you are with me on your sense of humour, then this is hilarious ;)

I'm a big fan of silly cartoons like this, where the situation is absurd and the prat falls even more so. I grew up watching the likes of Rolf's Cartoon Time on BBC1, and I've loved the likes of Tom and Jerry, Road Runner and Bugs Bunny ever since.

Let's get a little point out of the way first, some of these cartoons have dated a lot and they are definitely of their time, they can be racist and sexist at moments. I don't think these cartoons should be ignored, because, like other media of the time, they can give us a social view on our own history, good, or bad. However, that is not what I'm discussing here today. This is a fun post about cats trying to catch mice and rabbits outfoxing - well - just about everybody. :)

The silliness of Sylvester and Tweetie, and the dastardliness of Tom when he is trying to catch Jerry (and of course failing), raise belly laughs from me, and the most entertaining thing, I find, when I'm watching these kind of cartoons with my family is to see my father crying with laughter. The whole point of them for me is that they are daft and I am glad to see that carried forward into more modern cartoons like The Tiny Toons and The Animaniacs.

My favourite output from Animaniacs has to be Pinky and the Brain, and anyone who doesn't know how to reply to 'Gee Brain, Whaddaya wanna do tonight?', check out the vid below ;)

I'm a child of the 80's, so Looney Toons and the like were ancient when I watched them as a child, but I have never stopped watching cartoons and I'm glad to see silliness making it into the cartoons of today like Spongebob. Even in the slick production of Toy Story we have the likes of 'That's not flying, that's falling with style'. And, as long as they keep making me laugh, I'll keep watching them, if nothing else, laughing at Wile E Coyote getting whacked by a truck to the strains of a waltz has to be some form of stress relief.

So, y'see there's merit in them thar madhatters!

Do you have any favourite cartoons?
