Guest Post: Interview with Samie Sands Author of Lockdown and Forgotten, The AM13 Series

Today, I am welcoming author Samie Sands, who has agreed to answer some questions about herself and her books. So, without further ado, onwards to the interview! P.S. Samie is also running a competition, read on down to find out more.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Until a few years back, I was a graphic designer, but I’ve always wanted to try writing, so as soon as the idea for Lockdown came into my mind, I gave it a go.

I have a degree in Media Studies and PR and currently live in a small seaside town in the UK with my family. I love to travel to gain inspiration from different places and other cultures.

Tell us about your book(s).

Lockdown is the first book in the AM13 series, and Forgotten is the sequel. I am currently working on the third and final book. They’ve been published by Triplicity Publishing.

The books are based in the zombie apocalypse, but they aren’t your traditional gore and action novels, they have a much more feminine touch to them. The characters in the books aren’t equipped for this world – they aren’t in the military, they don’t have medical knowledge – they are just your average person who has to survive.

Do you have a favourite character from your book(s)? Why?

Leah is the main character from Lockdown and I spent a lot of time with her, trying to get her right. I wanted her to be flawed, normal, easy to relate to and from the feedback I’ve received, it seems I got it right!

What's easier for you, action, or dialogue, or description? 

I actually find writing thought easier, which is why all of my books are from the first person perspective. I think you can really express how someone is feeling this way – particularly when it’s inner turmoil.

What is your favourite genre and why?

My favourite genre to write is horror because it’s a lot of fun to develop characters due to the horrific, life changing situations facing them. However my favourite genres to read are rom-com and dystopian fiction.

If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be?

Caring.

Do you have any odd (writing) habits?

I write at odd times. Sometimes I’ll wake up at 2am with an idea that I just have to get down at that moment. It’s annoying because then I’ll be exhausted the next day!

What's your favourite colour, why?

Yellow because it’s bright and happy. You can never be miserable when wearing yellow!

Guest Post: Interview With Nathaniel Danes Author of The Last Hero

Today, I am happy to welcome Nathaniel Danes, author of Science Fiction book, The Last Hero. He has agreed to answer some questions!

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I'm a pretty regular guy. I like my beer and football but I also write science fiction novels. The universes I create are an escape for me. I'm losing my sight to a genetic disorder and am almost blind. It's fun to imagine world's where I don't have limitations.

Tell us about your book(s).
Right now I'm knee deep in THE LAST HERO trilogy. Book 1, The Last Hero, is out and book 2, The Last Revenge, will be out in a month or so.
The series starts off with Earth rushing to remobilize their military to defend themselves from a new alien threat. The main character, Trent Maxwell, is the last Medal of Honor recipient in U.S. history and he's tagged to lead the first counter-strike. It's hard for him to leave his daughter behind, but the stakes are too high, he has to fight again.

Writing – why?
I've always had an overactive imagination and, as I've said, I use it as a coping mechanism for my loss of vision. I always wanted to share the stories I wrote in my head but I'm also dyslexic and the idea of me writing a book was a crazy idea for many years. However, college, grad school, and a day job that requires a lot of writing conspired to sharpen my skills. Once I had the ability to share them, they demanded to be set free.

Do you have a favourite character from your book(s)? Why?
Certainly do. Anna, because she's based on my own little girl.

What is your favourite genre and why?
I love writing science fiction for a couple of reasons. One, the future is a blank canvas with limitless possibilities. That kind of freedom to dream is fun. Secondly, I believe the human race, driven by our thrust for knowledge and sense of adventure, will achieve great things in the centuries to come. I like to think about how we'll get there.

Do you have any odd (writing) habits?
I don't think it's odd, but a lot of folks find it interesting my novels are written entirely on an iPad Mini without a keyboard, 90,000-plus words all by thumbs.

If you could invite one character from someone else's books to dinner, who would it be? 
Ender from Ender's Game. Who wouldn't want to talk military history with the greatest military mind in history.

Are you a dog or a cat person, why?
Dog. Never, ever trust a cat. Their just waiting to try and take over. If it weren't for dogs they just might've done it by now.

Trent knelt down where Anna could throw her arms around his neck. She pulled against him tight and started crying again. Tears rolled down his face as he whispered, “I love you more than you can understand. I’m sorry.”

Her cries downed out his soft words.

After a minute, Trent summoned all of his strength to break free of her hold. Standing, he shared a look with Madison. She wrapped him in a loving, warm hug.   

This time she did the whispering, “Remember what I told you. Make them pay.”

Interview with Author Vanessa Wright about her book, Twisted

Today, I am welcoming author, Vanessa Wright to my blog to answer some questions and talk about her book, Twisted.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Vanessa is a 47 year old visual artist, author, mom and pug breeder. Two of her Afrikaans short stories have recently been published in My kort vir jou sop available on www.amazon.com as an e-book and released in soft cover at www.boekemakranka.co.za  She has taken part in Nanowromo 2012 and 2013 and reached the target on day 26. Tell us about your book, Twisted.

A collection of 22 short stories from the bizarre to the truly chilling as the author takes you along for a roller coaster ride, welcoming you to the darker side of humanity. She delves into the shadowy world of obsessions, addictions, death and the loss of innocence and imagination. She takes an honest, in depth look at things that happen all around us, yet we tend to ignore. Here we are forced to look at the pain of what it means to be human in all its various facets and to truly explore the face that looks back at us in the mirror. No one is truly good or truly evil; nothing is exclusively beautiful or ugly, we are a sublime mix of the two, walking the tightrope median between the two opposites. Excerpt: Bright Lines

The pain was so excruciating that the primitive, instinctual mind swept in and strangled her hold on the cold, metal object in her hand; survival being paramount.  She endured a few agonizing seconds before euphoria washed her away and out to a sea of peace.

She could feel her mind escaping the confines of her body; the binding chains were thrown off, liberating her imprisoned soul.  With a sigh of relief she became a light, downy feather abreast the rising air currents.  She bobbed rhythmically to the deep internal breathing of the earth.  She held her own breath, afraid of disturbing the feeling of inner peace and warmth that suffused her body. It broke through barriers and walls that were cemented into her soul by time; shattered her strongholds and allayed age old fears of insecurity and worthlessness. In this second, now, she was more than worthy.

Colours appeared brighter as if life had been washed back into them.  The bleach had leeched out and leaves on the elm trees outside ran green with the sap of life.  The sky seemed to bleed blue into the day.  She exhaled slowly, carefully and watched her breath become kaleidoscopic reds, greens, yellows and shiny purples.  Tentatively she reached out and touched the brittle clouds of vapour and dissipated them into slithering ribbons of light.  Their beautiful reflections made her eyes hurt and her heart contract with sadness and loss.  

Her body became weightless, tethered to the earth by a gossamer spider’s thread.  Threadbare she had come into this earth and threadbare she would escape its confines.  Her thoughts scattered and twisted, undulating lazily around the idea of living and surviving.  Perhaps and perhaps not she thought, giggling giddily.  Control was hers to keep or to release.  How easy it would be to allow her life to slip silently away.  Allow it to be carried away on sea breezes and on the white feathers of barn owls.

Her outer shell could then become one with the earth, decomposed and nutrient rich. Her bits and pieces gnawed at, secreted away by chipmunks and field mice; becoming part of a shelter here and the lining of a cosy nest there. Scattered and mindlessly free she would roam the earth, and her life’s circle would close, ending where it had begun…..dust to dust. At this thought a lazy self-indulgent smile curled at the corners of her wide mouth.

Writing – why?
I write because there is no other choice, it is the only way to get the characters to shut up and leave me alone.

Is there any genre you won't write and why?
No I cross genres so many times that my head spins and am a sucker for pleasing readers.

What is your favourite genre and why?
My favourite genre would be psychological thrillers. I love getting into the heads of the murderers.

Do you have conversations with your characters?
I constantly have conversations with my characters which is why I argue with them when they make a choice that I have not foreseen. They say the test for insanity is when you answer back.

If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be?
crazy-quirky

If you could invite one character from your books to dinner, who would it be?
I would invite my muse- she is even crazier than I am and a hoot, which is guaranteed to liven up any dinner party.

Are you a dog or a cat person, why?
Both a dog and a cat person- 3 cats and 9 dogs.

Guest Interview with Authors Julia Matthews & Vickie Matthews

Today I'm welcoming back one of  my previous guest posters, Julia Matthews, and, accompanying her is her writing partner, Vickie Mathews. They're here to promote their upcoming release (12th March 2014) Witch & Wolf,  and before I give the details of the book itself, I had a few questions for Julia and Vickie.

Can you tell us a little about yourselves?
Julia (daughter) and Vickie (mother) are a mother/daughter writing team. Guess you could say Julia does the writing and Vickie does the story telling. We both work on the editing, cover designs, and other marketing aspects. Vickie loves to watch Julia sit and turn an idea into an amazing scene that she can envision without being in front of a television. Julia loves the time that they spend together working out how the story needs to go. Julia’s say the best part is when Vickie is editing and she runs across one of her major blooper typo’s and burst into a hysterical fit over some part that was meant to be dead serious, but the mistype makes it hilarious.

Tell us about your book. 
Witch & Wolf is an adult paranormal romance about Randal Wolf who wants Joslyn safe from the Other Kin Elders, because they wish her to fulfil only part of a prophecy about her, but when they get to close to her he finds out she’s his natural mate. Going against one’s natural instinct isn’t easy, which is what Randal is faced with when Joslyn asked to fulfil the entire prophecy about her own self, so they can seal their natural mate connections.

Do you have a favourite character from your book? Why? 
Surprisingly we agree that Joslyn is their favourite character, because she’s a survivor and keeps her eye on the overall main goal.

Do you have any advice for other writers? 
Julia says don’t let the unknown hold you back. You won’t be able to know what you are truly capable of if you don’t try it a couple of times. Vickie says don’t give up on your dreams. You never know when, where, or how they may come true.

What is your favourite genre and why? 
Vickie doesn’t have a favourite genre to read in. To her if it can gain her interest in the first couple of pages then the book is a hit. Her writing preference is in Adult Paranormal Romance. Julia reads in pretty much any genre, except non-fiction. Prefers to write in M/M Paranormal and Adult Paranormal Romance, as well as adding in some Sci-Fi/Fantasy aspects into her stories.

Do you have conversations with your characters? 
Vickie and Julia both do. Julia not only conversations, she will dream about the characters. In fact when she was writing Witch & Wolf, one of the scenes with Randal came to her while she was asleep. She was exhausted and didn’t want to get up to jot it down, so she tried to ignore it. Big mistake. Randal turned into snarling half human half wolf figure who was screaming line after line of dialogue at here. Needless to say she got up and wrote the scene so she could get some sleep.

If you could invite one character from your books to dinner, who would it be? 
Both Vickie and Julia say Joslyn. Vickie, because of her never roll over and die attitude. Julia would also want to figure out how she got the courage to bide her time to face off with the Other Kin Elders.

Are you a dog or a cat person, why? 
Either, but Vickie has two dogs and Julia has one dog.

I live in Tennessee with my family. I have been writing all my life and I enjoy reading Young Adult Fiction.

Tell us about your book(s).
My books are stories that will pull at your emotions and make you lose yourself in the world that I have created.  All of which are stories about a new life, whether it be that it is a welcome change or not.  It is all about the issues that my characters have to face and how they make it through them.

Writing – why?
I write because I have to.  It is more than something that I enjoy doing.  It is a need.

Do you have a favourite character from your book(s)? Why?
It would have to be Laynie from my Waking Up Dead series.  She is such a strong character, but she has a weak side as well.  The way that she believes herself to be a monster, yet she still feels love for others.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
Just do it. Don’t worry about selling or people wanting to read it. Just write it and do it with everything inside you.

What is your favourite genre and why?
I love Young Adult Fiction and the many sub-genres.

Do you have conversations with your characters?
Yes.  Sometimes out loud and everyone thinks I’m totally nuts.

Do you have any odd (writing) habits?
I yell at myself when I write something that I don’t fully agree with.

If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be?
Different.

O is for Open - Interview with Author, Kia Zi Shiru, Black Sheep 3 Blog Tour

Sometimes I think readers of my blog get bored with just my opinions and thoughts on stuff, so I open my blog to guest posts :). Today, I am pleased to be opening the doors to Kia Zi Shiru, a talented writer of Young Adult (YA) fiction, who is on a blog tour to promote the third book in her Black Sheep Trilogy, Fighting for a Future. More about the book later, but first, I asked Kia a few questions...

First, some sensible background questions:

How long have you been writing?

I started seriously writing when I was around 20, I had been working on Black Sheep for 2 or 3 years by then and decided that if I was ever going to be an author I should seriously finish it. Before that, I’ve got some things from back when I was 8 or 9 and then my huge epic SciFi story that I worked on during most of my early and mid teens. Although I outgrew the story and life got in the way. Though a lot of subjects that were visible in that story are also explored in Black Sheep and some of my other stories.

But seriously thinking about writing, being an author and publishing started when I was 20/21, about 4 years ago now.

What made you start writing YA?
I was in the age group for it. I was 17 or 18 when I started Black Sheep, basically because I was the same age as my characters. Also, most the stories I read on FictionPress were of that same age group and that was what I was used to.

How long did it take you to develop the ideas for The Black Sheep Trilogy?
Most of the ideas for the story came in just a few days/weeks though some things have changed over time and some only came to me as I was writing them (like why Vic was so withdrawn towards Jack in some places at the beginning of the story). Over all most of the ideas stayed the way they were from the start.

Is there one scene in any of the three books that you are particularly proud of?

Ehhhhmmmm, there is a scene in the second book where Vic is off his medication and you get a glimpse into his mind. It both scares me when I read it and it makes me feel so proud that I was able to grasp depression and mental illusions in a way that it is accessible.

But most of all, it scares me.

Now a few less formal questions ;):

Do your characters talk to you?

Yes, even though I haven’t been writing Black Sheep for over a year now they still pop up and I would go along with them when they explain something more about themselves.

Though these days I’m spending most my time with Evan and Thomas and a bit with Jacob and Joey, all characters of my new story.

If yes, do you talk back? ;P

I usually let another character talk back to them. I guide the other character as to ask certain questions even though it doesn’t always work. Sometimes I impose a question on the character and it will fight. It won’t ask the question I want, usually either because it would be out of character for them to do so or because the character doesn’t want to ask it (often when it’s a really emotional question).

And this happens any moment that I’m not busy using my brain for other stuff, so, you know, this is what is going on in my brain most of the day.

Do you have any odd writing habits?

I softly talk during writing. I usually try not to but I will move my mouth to pronounce all the things going on, especially dialogue.

This has been a habit since I was really young since my mother can remember me walking on my own (back from school or something) and I would talk to myself (without making a sound) but I would do arm movements, head movements and all the other things you do when talking.

It seems that people think it’s interesting to watch me walk on my own since this habit hasn’t stopped just yet.

If you had to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?

Crazy

If someone offered to employ you to write them a story to their specifications, would you do it and why?

I would be interested, I like a challenge. I think it would be interesting to see what I would be able to do with a world that wasn’t mine since I haven’t written fanfiction even though I read a lot of it.

Writer's block - in your opinion, is it real?

Yeah, though it mostly has to do with either doing something wrong in the work you’re doing or you really need a mental break. Sometimes your brain can have a cramp, you’ve gotta relax it before you can go on.

If you could invite one writer to tea, who would it be?

Only one? Okay, I think I would choose Edward van de Vendel.

Why?

He is a Dutch author and has written The Days of Bluegrass Love, a gay teen book that has immensely inspired my own writing. It was one of the few teen books that I read when I was a teen (aka between 12 and 17/18)  and I still re-read it almost each year.

Jack is dead, Adam is back in the hospital in the worst condition he's ever been and Vic believes it's all his fault. That he's the reason everyone's hurting and that there's only one way to end it - to end his own life.

Vic seems to be overcoming another bout of depression but as he seems to be getting better the lives of the people around him are turning worse. After a clash with Adam Vic seeks help in a place he shouldn’t, unknowingly putting Jack at risk.

Black Sheep: Fighting for a Future
Vic’s bad streak doesn’t seem to be ending soon and everybody has to deal with losses of their own. Until the doctor gives Vic the worst news of all, he is dying. This finally jars Vic into action, he wants to make all his loved ones happy before that happens.

But time is running out quickly and he isn’t sure he will be able to reach his goal.
