Review: Ghostbusters - Awesomesauce!

Okay, so I may have revealed my opinion in the title of the post, but let me explain why I loved Ghostbusters (2016).

Now, I have been a fan of the original two movies since I was young, in fact, after seeing the new movie, I went back and re-watched the original Ghostbusters just for old times' sake :). Still good! But, ever since I first saw the trailers for the new movie, I have been waiting with excited anticipation for the reboot.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big paranormal fan - give me a movie or show with a ghost in it, and I'm there. Give me a movie with four kick-arse ghosthunters in it as well and you just made it a certainty I'm going to at least give it a visit at the cinema. However, that doesn't mean I wasn't nervous about this movie: there's been so much controversy about it, much more than other reboots that have slipped onto the scene, or blasted in some cases, I mean, Spider-man is about to launch into it's third since 2002 and no-one seems to mind, but Ghostbusters has drawn some vitriol.

So, I toddled off to the cinema with my sister, eagerly anticipating this reboot and hoping that it was going to reinforce my love of the original while giving me something new to love about this franchise. I have to say, in the first 15 to 20 minutes, I wasn't so sure. The jokes were cliched and dull, with only a few moments of excellence; the opening section in the Aldridge Mansion is classic Ghostbusters, but after that, I would say to everyone, give the movie time to start properly.

Once the movie did launch, about the time that the gals start ghostbusting and Patty enters their lives, then there was no let up, I laughed, giggled, and snorted my way through the rest of the movie. It was AWESOME!

These ladies here, as much a bunch of misfits as Egon, Ray, Venkman and Winston, had me smiling like a loon. I loved them all. Patty Tolan is a no nonsense, sassy woman who knows all there is to know about the history of the city of New York. Abby Yates has never wavered from her conviction that the paranormal is real and her one-liners are genius. Erin Gilbert tried to leave the paranormal behind, but in the end, has to embrace her inner ghostbuster; she's dorky, intelligent and I love her. And Jillian Holtzman - she has to be my favourite special little snowflake, who's into particle physics and engineering and doesn't give two hoots what anyone else thinks.

This quartet of lovable nerds yank the Ghostbusters franchise very firmly into the 21st Century.

The story is not a remake of the original Ghostbusters, although it gives a lot of nods to its predecessor. This is a good thing. This story picks up the legacy of the original films and runs with it into a new space. There is a new bad guy, new tricks and tools in the Ghostbusters' arsenal, and a fun twist on the modern need for governmental cover-ups. Plus, there's Kevin.

Kevin is not a gender-swapped Janine Melnitz. Just like all the other characters, he owes his existence to the original movie, i.e. there was a secretary in the original, but Kevin is his own little bundle of laughs - and yes, I'm understating it, some of the jokes linked to Kevin had me crying with laughter. I will say no more, you have to see him to believe him.

You may have gathered that I thought the acting in Ghostbusters 2016 is excellent. The effects are fantastic too. Like everything else, the ghosts take their inspiration from the look of the originals, but then 21st Century computer graphics up the ante. The interactions with the ghosts are much more visually sophisticated and make the fights scenes at the end stupendous. Friends of mine have mentioned they might have been cheering out loud during the movie, and I can guess where. All I will say is, these ladies kick arse!

So, I'll stop now with a final word: ignore all the controversy and hype, go see this movie as a fun Summer reboot and you won't be disappointed.

So, my WIP is called, Witch Blood. It's the second in The Night Blood Chronicles:,
When coming of age means a taste for blood. Tom Franklin is haunted by his dreams, nightmarish images of dark places and even darker instincts. Learning they are repressed memories from his early childhood, Tom must face the heritage from his birth-father, a savage vampire known only as Raxos.

Page 7 of my word document takes the reader into Tom's memories of when he was with his father as a small child. The first book, Night Blood, dealt with revelations and extremes of emotions, but in Witch Blood, Tom is beginning to explore what his father's heritage means to him, and that involves remembering what it meant when he was a child.

He [Tom] wobbled a bit, because everything was blurry and he kept thinking about the taste of the blood in his mouth. It was gone now, clean like his face and hands, that Papa had wiped, but he was still tingling with the excitement of chasing the rabbit and he kept remembering the bite. It took him a moment to realise they had stopped and he just stood there when Papa crouched down to his level. Papa smiled at him. Tommy blinked back.

[You did well tonight, Tommy], Papa praised and he felt pride that was not his own slip into the back of his thoughts.

The happy feeling slowly made Tommy smile too, but it was one of those funny times when he knew it wasn't all him...

Book Review: The Haunting of Highdown Hall by Shani Struthers

A slow starter, this book grew on me.

I enjoyed this story, and since it's set in Sussex, the county right next door to my own, I enjoyed the localness of it all as well. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that it deviates into explanations quite a lot: there's far too much of the author telling me what she knows about the local area and not just what, as the reader, I need to know.

The book starts well - a flashback to Christmas Eve 1958 and an English movie star, Cynthia Hart, celebrating her 31st birthday. She's a diva, she's a flirt, she drives men wild - and she dies that night of a heart attack. However, when we arrive back in the 21st Century, the first few pages dive into a totally unnecessary background information dump that could have been achieved in the first scene with the modern-day characters, Ruby Davis and her band of psychics.

Despite this detour, the start had intrigued me enough that I kept reading, and, gradually Ruby began to grow on me. This is a book that sounds written from the heart. Shani wants to tell me everything about Lewes that both she and Ruby clearly adore - it's just that most of the time I didn't need to know all that detail and I did end up skipping whole paragraphs that I began to recognise as the 'local colour' ones.

I actually ended up really enjoying this story. The characters are interesting and convincing, the plot, which is concerned with finding out why Cynthia is still in the manor she called home, had some twists that kept me reading, and I read the whole second half of the book in one sitting. I liked it enough to go and buy the second book in the series.

Book Review: House of Whispers (Ellie Jordan,. Ghost Trapper #5) - Paranormal Adventure

I jumped up and down when this pre-order arrived on my kindle :)

House of Whispers by J.L. Bryan

J L Bryan is back on form with this story - I was a little concerned by the previous book that the situations would start becoming too large for the intimately scary plots, but not so, I am heartily reassured :).

I gobbled this book up in 3 days, which left me bereft once I had finished it, but I didn't want to put it down, except stuff like work got in the way!

Ellie and Stacey are investigating mysterious goings on at the Lathrop hotel, a big posh hotel with a notorious 4th floor. We're introduced to established ghosts, and anecdotes galore about the haunts in the hotel and, I have to say, I was not expecting the way the encounters panned out. There are a few obvious plot points about the ghosts, but J L Bryan uses them so well, making them almost like distractions so that when the mental sleight of hand occurs it's intriguing and kept me reading and reading.

This is one of the best books in the series, I loved it.

Book Series Review: Society for Paranormals by Vered Ehsani - Paranormal Adventure

I have just mainlined another series of books, Society for Paranormal by Vered Ehsani, because I was so hooked, here are my reviews:


Ghosts of Tsavo by Vered Ehsani
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

If I had to sum up this book in one word, I don't think I could, because it has so many qualities. It is irreverent, thrilling, dry-humoured and gripping all in one story. The only reason it doesn't have 5 stars is because it needs a bit more of an edit for spelling and misused words, something the rest of the series does not suffer from, I might add.

Mrs Beatrice Knight, widowed and dependent on her uncle and his family, is not quite your ordinary widow, in fact, she is extraordinary. She knows how to defend herself against many different types of paranormal trouble, she tramps into danger with very little regard for herself or Victorian etiquette, and she has a gloriously irreverent view of her position in society. In short, she's a great lead for this and the other Society for Paranormals series.

Apart from Beatrice, I also like the fact that not every character is black and white. They have flaws, they have their own agendas and Bea is often conflicted about them, which leads to some great plot twists and turns.

I smiled, I sighed, I frowned and I laughed with this book. Great story!

The Automaton's Wife by Vered Ehsani
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After reading the first book in this series, I went and bought the next one and started reading it immediately, because there were a few tantalizing strings of thought left dangling in the previous book, not too much, it was its own story, but with just enough teasing ideas to make me want to jump to the next story.

Bea continues her adventures in Africa with the help and also complications of her friends and family. And there is extra depth to her character in this story as she worries about her dead husband's motives for disappearing on her (yes, she is haunted by his ghost), while also handling the absurdity of a horse possessed by a snake spirit. In this story, Bea is beginning to question all she knows and has been told by people she trusted and loved.

This story is compelling, I didn't want to put it down. Great characters, great plot and a romping good read.


Revenge of the Mantis by Vered Ehsani
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Bea's past is catching up with her in this story. A creature so deadly she haunts Bea's dreams is on the move and coming for revenge!

This is the tightest written of the books so far and I was totally hooked all the way through. Vered throughout these books has been dropping breadcrumbs about what is to come with an art I would love to be able to replicate. There is never a moment of dullness, something is always taking place, moving the story on, whether that moment is tragic, or hilarious.

All the characters continue to develop, some in surprising ways, some to my gratification as the reader. This book is an easy, entertaining read and you'll want to finish it.



The Fourth Mandate by Vered Ehsani
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

By the time I got to this book, I was so hooked on the series, that I read it in one sitting.

Bea is slowly losing confidence in all that she has been told about herself, her family history and the Society for Paranormals for who she has been working. Her life is changing, her outlook is widening and Africa is turning into her home, not just a place to stay while her uncle rejuvenates the family finances. The development of her character is well done, and I was rooting for her all the way through.

I hated the bad guys and loved the good guys and hmmed about the characters in between.

This book features more about the society, which has been sitting behind the plot for most of the other stories. They are front and centre and widen the perspective of the series as other motives and background information come into play.

I am eagerly awaiting book 5!

Book Review: Ashwood House by L K Jay - paranormal thriller

I have a stack of brilliant books that I finished while I was on holiday that I need to review and, since I just finished this one and I have time to write a review, here it is - this is a great paranormal thriller with good characters, I couldn't put it down!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book. I don't think I'd have read it if there hadn't been a paranormal element to it, because the rest of the book is a pretty realistic thriller about a woman who is released from prison after serving 15 years for stabbing her abusive husband to death and the choices she had to face. However, I was surprised, I really enjoyed everything about the book, I loved Savannah, the main character, she is relatable, down to earth and she felt real. In fact this whole book felt very real, even the ghost.

The interaction between human and spirit is handled calmly, logically and pragmatically, because, above all, Savannah is a pragmatic woman. She is methodical in her choices, taking a little human companionship where she can, hoping the best for her mentee from prison, Tamsin, and deciding who to befriend in the small village where she takes up residence as housekeeper for Ashwood House.

There is spookiness to this book, despite Savannah's sensible outlook, and there are thrills too as she handles hiding from her husband's murderous family. I found myself liking Savannah a lot, rooting for her and wanting the best for her. Her character makes the book and I would like to read more about her.

Just a final note about the author and the way the book is written. There are quite a lot of typos/missing words, but I didn't care, since the text itself was so engaging. And this author knows how to write a really good story, gradually building up the tension and giving a really good finish. I am beginning to think that the last part of the story is the most important for me, the round up, after the climax, the bit that leaves me thinking about the characters and what they are going to do next. And this one's a keeper :).

Book Series Review: Ellie Jordan Ghost Trapper by J.L. Bryan

So, I've been lucky over the last month, I've found two books series I love. This one, Ellie Jordan Ghost Trapper by J.L. Bryan, is focused around a ghost hunter, Ellie Jordan, who traps ghosts and takes them away from her clients' houses. These are (mainly) fast-paced action stories with a mystery to keep the reader guessing. These are my four reviews from Goodreads.

Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper by J.L. Bryan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I wasn't sure about this book when I first started it. I picked it up because it was a freebie and I like paranormal adventures. The first half of the book is bogged down with too much explanation, introducing the reader to the techniques, processes and equipment that Ellie uses in her paranormal investigations. There are whole paragraphs giving background information, and it was a little wearing.

However, the story held me. Something I'll say about all the Ellie Jordan books, they're good plots. There are spooks and spine chilling moments, mixed with a good mystery, since Ellie has to discover the ghosts' motives for haunting in order to deal with them.

This book is very much plot driven: the ghost hunting and the mystery pull the reader in and I wanted to find out what was going on. That's why I stuck out the explainy bits (that's why I docked it one star) and I was rewarded with a fantastic climax that made me go out and buy the next book.

Cold Shadows by J.L. Bryan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So, I bought this book on the off chance that the story would be as good as the first book in the series, but with a lot fewer explainy bits. My gamble paid off. This is a better story than the first book, more tightly written and with a lot fewer pauses to drop in long explanations.

Like the first, it's plot driven, but the characters do begin to blossom slowly. Ellie is a woman with a troubled background locked in to the paranormal world. She didn't go searching for ghosts, they found her in a brutal way that led her to become a ghost hunter, wanting to help others who might end up in her position. She puts herself danger to save her clients. She doesn't feel sorry for herself and her past, she just gets on woth things with a dry humour as she narrates the story.

As with the first book, this story really pays off in the climax. All the pieces comes together and its exciting, and scary and I immediately went out and bought the next two books and the pre-ordered the fifth. I found myself getting hooked to this series thanks to this story.

The Crawling Darkness by J.L. Bryan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is book three of the series, and by the time I'd picked this up, I'd already read the first two in three days, so I had high hopes for this story too. And I loved it. I had got to know the main characters, Ellie and Stacy, well in the other stories and their repartee in this one made me smile.

This is another strong mystery that I thought I had pegged, but there's a twist at the climax, for which I tip my hat to the author.

Like any series, the ghosts get bigger and badder in this third installment and we find out some background on another character - Ellie has history with this ghost and it makes her vulnerable. That gives this story an added dimension and I couldn't put the book down. I just wanted to find out what happened.

Great mystery, growing characters. I enjoyed being scared by this book.

Terminal by J.L. Bryan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

As much as I love the Ellie Jordan books, I was disappointed by this one. The strongest point of these books is the plot, the mystery and this book fell short in comparison to the previous three. It's an interesting overall story about a haunted housing estate, but it just did not hang together as well as the others.

There are some gaps in the story that bothered me. For example, there is an encounter between Ellie and a large number of ghosts in a basement, there's a silent face to face and then it just gets forgotten, not mentioned again. Since EVP had already been used, I thought there might be follow up using this, but there isn't. There's also a lack of interaction with 'the clients' towards the end of the story. I was always rooting for not only Ellie, but the clients as well by the end of the other three stories, but this one felt like they were remote from the end of the story and it left me dissatisfied.

I'm only making a supposition here, but I think the gaps and the remoteness of the story are down to the fact that, as has been the case with the other stories, J. L. Bryan is going bigger with the ghosts, but rather than making an individual spectre more dangerous, he has gone with more ghosts instead, and he's opened the 'stage' of the story out from one house to a large area of country. That created a separateness for me from the people in the story and there were too many moving parts for the plot to keep track, too many ghosts, not really enough resolution.

I also found the climax this time a bit too OTT.

There are lots of good ideas in this story - J.L. Bryan's take on a banshee, which had potential, making deals with hostile ghosts, a mixture of bad guys, but there were so many that none really bore fruit.

I hope the next book focuses back down. This is an okay story, but not a great one like the rest.

A ghost is the soul of a dead person that lingers on earth after their death. The living can sometimes see ghosts in the form of apparitions. They are often described as translucent, misty, and floating. They are solitary essences that haunt specific locations, maybe where they died, their home, or their place of work. Ghosts, although many people are frightened of them because anything with death and the afterlife can be scary, they do not hurt people. Only dark entities cause harm.

QUESTION: What’s your favorite ghost movie?

Fictional witches have magnificent supernatural powers such as the ability to conjure fire, control the wind, and send lightning down from the sky. They vanquish demons and warlocks with spells and potions (Charmed). They cast spells with wands and fly on broomsticks (Harry Potter).

Witches outside of fiction don’t have supernatural powers. Wicca is a religion that honors the earth and nature. Wiccans use herbs and stones to cast spells for strength, love, courage, among other things.

Because of the stigma around witches, many people fear them and picture them cackling over a bubbling cauldron. In fiction, they most likely do just that. In real life, they laugh with friends over a stove while they make a soup or tea full of delicious ingredients that may heighten health and happiness.

Her latest target is a Mafia big shot. Nothing she can’t handle easily, except she runs into a little snag of the vampire persuasion at the end of the job.

Assassin’s Blood is a short story full of paranormal intrigue and action with a little bit of romance to round it off.
