Ghostly Inspirations I is for Isolation #AtoZChallenge 2018

Welcome to my offering for The A to Z Blogging Challenge 2018
My theme this year is Ghostly Inspirations
a collection of spirits that have been prompted by my encounters with places and times. Some are spooky, some more about atmosphere. I'll be describing each inspiration and the phantom that came to my mind, and then I will share a drabble, which I hope will entertain. :)

Disclaimer: The places and experienced I have used for my inspiration are real, but my ghosts and drabbles are complete fiction, linked to nothing and no-one, alive or dead. When writing about my inspirations, I may have changed names and obfuscated specific details to 'protect the innocent' :).

I is for Isolation

Inspiration:
Have you ever worked in one of those modern offices where the lights are movement reactive? I have. But have you ever worked in one of those offices late at night? I have, a large modern office. And do you know what happens when you’re sat at your desk all alone? Block by block, each set of lights go out until there is just one pool of light right over your desk.

Ghost:
Henry was the guy in the office that no-one noticed. He wore a grey suit and off-white shirt every day. Each morning, he walked to his desk, turned on his pc and took off his jacket. Then he walked to the fridge in the break room and placed his lunchbox on the second shelf at the back. Then he returned to his desk and began work on his now booted computer.

He was so anonymous, that when he went to the toilet and did not come back, because his heart gave out in the cubicle, no one noticed until the night security found him.

Since then, Henry has not left work.

In The Dark

Desk lit brightly, Ken shifted in his seat and couldn’t help glancing out into the gloom that was the rest of the office. He had a report to finish, but no concentration. The noises were bad enough, creaks and groans from all over the large dark room, but worse, one light over a desk behind and to his right kept flickering on and off.

He jumped as it flickered suddenly once more.

Shaking himself, Ken stared back at his screen. Yet the hair raised on the back of his neck, the air chilled, and he heard it, a single footstep.

  1. I haven't worked at these modern offices, but I have worked in those ancient offices with their flickering tube-lights and century old mounds of paperwork. Staying late in those offices is an experience in itself.

  2. I could not work in one of those offices - at least not without running up and down every time the lights went off! *shivers* Great as ever.
    Poor Henry.

  3. I have no worked in an office like that, but at my former job they had cameras that would put up a little symbol when someone walked through a room and one day I spent a good while staring at the screen looking to see if that happened when no one was in the room. It did not.

  4. This is so good and it made the hair on the back of my neck rise as well. Really well written and full of suspense in just a few words. Reminds me of working on in old hospitals and a patient buzzer going off at a bed where there isn't a patient - not great on night shift.

  5. I guess that's one reason not to work late. LOL! Seriously though, I've worked many times at an office new and old late at night and it can get scary for sure.

    1. It's funny, I don't normally associate places of work with ghosts, but when all the lights go out....ugh!
