Turn (G, Gen, Fantasy)
by Sophie Duncan
Chin resting on her hands, hands on the table, Kelly watched the last few grains of sand run through the slender aperture into the bottom of the timer. She smiled, reached out and, with no little effort, flipped the large device. Instantly, the golden sand began to tumble again, slipping and sliding over itself, quickly making a little indent in the otherwise smooth surface of the encased dune.
Another year marked: Kelly nodded to herself, satisfied, and, stepping smartly to her left, settled her chin on her hands and watched the amber cascade that was dying in the next bell.

Curious ending.
ReplyDeleteI just kept thinking about cycles, and Kelly popped into my head eternally turning timers. for what, i'm not sure :)
DeleteThere is a certain magic involved with watching an hour glass at work, seeing time in material form pass. The fact that there’s another hour glass that Kelly then moves onto watching and we’re left with the expectation that it is for another year’s time and that there might be more hour glasses than these two takes this deeper into the feeling of magic. It’s akin to the myth of the Moon Spinners.
ReplyDeleteI have a small hour glass at home, only lasts a couple of minutes, but I turn it from time to time, just to watch the sand tumble :) I did have magic in the back fo my mind as I wrote this ;)
